The Victorian

The Victorian is the National Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy, the first King of Italy.

It is often called Altar of the Fatherland, since it includes the Unknown Soldier.

The young architect Marche, Giuseppe Sacconi, presented the project to the model of the great shrines of’ classical age, and had a clear idea of ​​a work that gave prominence to Rome, projected in the Italian Risorgimento.
The staircases and terraces, enriched by the different groups of sculptures leading to the central Altar of the Fatherland where is the guard of honor to the fallen
In 1905 the death of’ architect Sacconi, the work was continued by the architects Gaetano Koch, Manfredo Manfredi and Pio Piacentini.
The Complesso del Vittoriano also hosts an exhibition space in its exhibitions and events.
